RAMPAGE
this little gem is the second effort by aussie director george something who made the strange but interesting film, soundtrack to war. man, 3 links already! anyways ... it's about 1 dude who he filmed in iraq and his family life in the miami riot region. growing up with all the violence and abuse and bad shit has certainly had an impact on 3 brothers who, through the use of rap and rhyme deal with life until one of the brothers is killed by another gang. it's pretty scary, the fact that he's filming all this stuff and even acknowledges that he might have had a part in marcus's death. but, the youngest brother uses that pain to try and make a deal with a record company. but, america isn't ready to hear a 14 yr old kid talking about his brother getting sprayed with bullets. it's a fascinating insight into the lives of african-american residents that live in a war zone in the picture perfect world of miami, florida. highly recommended viewing and a very impressive and daring documentary.
ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER
before he directed forest whitaker to an oscar for last king of scotland, kevin macdonald made this oscar winning doco about the munich olympics massacre. narrated by michael douglas, macdonald explores the events that took place in a pretty straight forward manner, but the detail he manages to accomplish by talking to the only living member of the assassination team is outstanding. also talking to several key players who at the time had an involvement in the ordeal, we learn how and why it all happened and the effect it had on the people in munich at the time. through the use of archival footage, newsreels and interviews, this film paints a very real and sometimes painful reminder of what took place that one day in september.
